Sport plays an important role in Estonian culture. After regaining independence from Russia in 1991, Estonia participated in all the editions of the Olympic Games, most of the medals being won by athletes. The Estonian Athletics Association is the organization that leads this activity, to which a number of 64 clubs are affiliated, with 4308 athletes.
In July, it will be the third time that Tallinn is hosting the European Junior Championships (U20). This year is, moreover, a jubilee one – 10 years have passed since the first major international competition took place at the “Kadriorg” stadium. Several stars of the world have launched from here: Daphne Schippers, Maria Lasitskene, Kevin Mayer or Johannes Vetter.
Among Estonia’s best-known athletes are the 2008 Olympic discus thrower Gerd Kanter, Aleksander Tammert (discus) and decathlonist Erki Nool.
And in the previous edition of the European Team Championships, the eighth, Estonia played in First League, a subdivision in which we will find it in Cluj Napoca.
